The Publishing Process in 9 steps.
When I first set out to start Debut Books, increasing accessibility to the industry and broadening representation was at the top of my list. For too long, the publishing industry has been shrouded in mystery, its walls impenetrable for so many writers.
When it comes to the publishing process, there is no secret formula; every publisher follows the same process. Some books require additional investment in certain areas – extra structural edits or multiple cover designs, for example – however the process stays the same.
When I talk about making the industry more diverse and accessible, what does that actually mean (and what does it look like in practice)?
For me, it means:
sharing knowledge and being transparent about the realities of being published
listening to people when they share their experiences, and believing them
making space for stories from all walks of life (no gatekeeping)
acknowledging the barriers people experience trying to enter the industry
myth-busting the assumption that traditional publishing is the only possible validation of a person’s writing
making space for you to ask questions, learn about the industry, make informed choices, understand the realities of publishing, set expectations, and know what you’re getting yourself into
coaching, mentoring, and supporting writers on their path to publication.
The Australian Arts sector is chronically underfunded and underrepresented and opportunities in the Australian publishing industry are few, considering how many writers want to be published.
The truth is, no one should be going into publishing expecting to make an abundance of money; the financial reality is grim (more on this is to come). Writers cannot expect funding and prizes to support their writing… it isn’t sustainable.
Traditional publishing is big business and money drives every decision they make. As with so many other industries, necessary change around representation, diversity, equity and belonging all comes down to money. Far too often, money is what’s holding back any change for the better. It drives opportunity (and who has access to it), who gets chosen for those opportunities and more.
I’m a firm believer in being the change you want to see. That means walking the talk and while this is an ongoing practice, the next step for Debut Books is to open its doors to meet any writer where they’re at on their writing journey.
Here is what the traditional publishing industry doesn’t tell you:
You have everything you need to be a published writer - with agency and power - within you already.
After more than a decade in the book industry, I believe I have the growing skills and knowledge to help writers on their journey to publication. My favourite part of being a publisher is having conversations with people, sharing knowledge and demystifying the publishing process. It means better accessibility, better conditions, and greater inclusivity!
