A logline is a short elevator pitch of the thing you are writing – a 1 or 2 sentence summary of your book’s plot. It gets to the core message of your story quickly and succinctly in just a few seconds.

A logline is no more than 30 words (give or take 3-5 words) and is not consumer facing; it is shared internally by publishers and agents, and if it is powerful enough, it can influence how your book is marketed.

The best loglines harmonise with the tagline, too!

Some tips:

  • are you writing a retelling? Mention it! It will set up the readerswith instant knowledge of the story (based on the tropes etc of the original story)

  • if you have won a shortlisting or a prize, mention it too!
