I saw a wonderful piece of advice in my reading lately and it said this:
‘Be a person first and a writer second.’
To be a long-term successful writer means that you’re not a writer all the time. There is work-mode and life-mode and although there will be times when life is a blend of these two parts of you, there will also be times where they can each have their space.
Authors, even the most successful, are still just people. They’re messy and imperfect, and equally as in love with their work as they are with the people in their lives.
The best thing you can do for you is to focus on nurturing a life that is fulfilling, one that your writing brings purpose to but doesn’t necessarily define your existence.
I truly believe that being able to write from a cup well filled – and making room in your life for the things that fill your cup – will take you further than any other thing you can do.
