Rest is not indulgent. It is a necessity.

Rest is not something that you need to earn. Rest is self-care. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and we’re so used to caring for our physical bodies, and yet caring for our internal selves is still not valued as it needs to be.

It is integral to sustaining a writing practice and our overall wellbeing.

You will write better and create better when you come from a place of rest. You will show up better for yourself and those around you when you make time to rest.

Rest is whatever refreshes and rejuvenates you and it will look and feel different for everyone.

What comes up for you when you think about rest? Is the first thing that comes to mind sleep?

If it is, I’m not surprised, and you won’t be alone in thinking that. Sleep is also integral to our wellbeing and yet rest is so much more.

I think of rest as soul food, as the things that rejuvenate me from the inside out.

Rest will look and feel different for everyone (you can argue with me all you want; scrolling on social media is NOT rest!).

I would like you to try to schedule rest in, every week. It may feel uncomfortable to do so, and will probably feel impossible with small kids. I hear you!

However, I hope that eventually you will find your way to a place where rest is non-negotiable, no matter what life throws your way.
